Preventing Youth Suicide

The Learning Counsel has published an excerpt from my book, Preventing School Violence: A User’s Guide

“Although the national suicide rate declined in 2020, (NY Times, September 10, 2021,) the suicide rate for the nation’s youth increased dramatically. Youth suicide (ages 10-24) increased nearly 60 percent between 2007 and 2018. Suicide is now the second-leading cause of death for 10- to 24-year-olds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In June 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that teenage suicide had replaced homicide as the second leading cause of teenage death. Almost as many teens die from suicide as the fourth through the tenth leading causes of death combined. It’s also thought that at least 25 attempts are made for every completed teen suicide.

If you work in a school or district today, this is a situation that sadly, you may have to deal with. What has caused this dramatic increase? What role did bullying play? Why would children so young, with a full life ahead of them attempt suicide? And most importantly, what might your role be in preventing it?”

The Growth of Weapons in Schools

I live in Albuquerque, NM where we have already had 3 school shootings since the beginning of 2022. Two resulted in children dying. One shooting took place in a middle school 3 days after school opened. The other occurred on February 25 near a high school where a high school junior was shot and killed by a 14-year-old student using a “ghost gun” (one which is purchased cheaply on the Internet and assembled at home).

In New York City, according to television station TV1, over 3300 weapons (guns, knives, and clubs) were seized at schools. This was an increase of over 80% from the previous year. Schools need to get ahead of the curve by preventing school violence not merely reacting to it. Schools need to provide for the mental as well as physical well being of students by providing sufficient numbers of school nurses, school counselors and psychologists.

My book, Preventing School Violence: A User’s Guide provides easy to implement suggestions such as – no one comes into any school unless they have a clear plastic book bag by having a clear plastic book bag, the weapons would be visible. This would not eliminate the carrying of weapons but would dramatically cut down on weapons brought into schools.

Second 5-Star Review on Amazon

My book, Preventing School Violence: A User’s Guide has received its 2nd 5-star review on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Most Helpful Guide to Preventing School Violence

Verified Purchase

This Guide to Preventing School Violence can make a tremendous difference in the lives of children, not something this reviewer can say about every education book. Schargel’s newest book is a must-read for teachers, administrators, policy makers, and everyone who cares about children. The author’s practical advice builds upon best practices that some educators and policy makers may already know, but the facts, information, and tips will be new to most people. This is one of THE best books in my library!
