Distance Learning: How do Parents Feel About It? Part 2

This is from a dental hygienist parent

She said it was terrible experience.  She now appreciates teachers more than ever.  She said she was lucky to get 60 minutes total for both kids per day and their typical school day had been from 8 ““ 2 and she couldn’t get them to concentrate for even 30 minutes each .  She couldn’t help both at the same time as they were both learning at different levels.  She said nothing they were given was new ““ the kids already knew what they were given.

She is computer literate, but since her kids were young she had to send in all their assignments electronically.  She said she couldn’t imagine doing it if she didn’t understand computers and knew how to type, etc.

She AND her kids couldn’t wait for change to come when she went back to work.  They now are in a camp day-care program with other kids and love the interaction and activities.  Although she was educated and did all kinds of things with her kids, she was SO thankful to go back to work.  Also, we was on unemployment which paid her 100% of her salary, but still she couldn’t wait for it to end.  She felt her kids felt the same way.

Distance Learning: How do Parents Feel About It?

Parents, because of the coronavirus lockdown have had to adopt  new unfamiliar roles. In addition to having to be a parent with all of the responsibilities that entails, they have had to serve as a teacher as well. This is in addition to working, a 9-5 job.

I am indebted to my friend and colleague, Ann Edenfield Sweet, Executive Director/Founder of Wings For LIFE International for sending this to me and for giving me permission to use it.

I’ve heard most parents say the distance learning educational piece has been a joke.  Problems have been:

  1. Not a computer at home or if they have one, they have to TRY to share it with the whole family ““ that doesn’t work.
  2. Parents don’t understand technology so just give up on trying to even get the programs, much less try to help their kids with the work.
  3. The kids can’t focus on the work and parents don’t have time to help them and don’t understand the work.
  4. It’s been difficult to set up routines so there are none and everyone just “does their own thing.”
  5. Kids hoard the computer and won’t share it.  They usually are NOT doing their homework.
  6. They don’t have enough work space for everyone to try to get work done (parents), homework for kids, etc.  So basically nothing gets done.
  7. Parents can’t wait to get their kids back in school ““ COVID or not COVID.

While these views are not necessarily the views of all parents, I believe that they represent the views of the parents to whom I have spoken.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH AMERICA?

“If it’s wrong, it’s wrong and if you say nothing or do nothing about it, you are complicit.”

Parents and educators have a responsibility and obligation to teach children right from wrong. The Constitution guarantees the right to peacefully assemble. Politicians, businesspeople, the media, sports figures, movie and tv people are complicit when they avoid criticizing the things that are happening. This is not a political discussion; It is a moral one. It is not anti-Trump or anti-Republican, it is anti-American.

The White House violates the when it has the American Army patrolling Washington DC and firing at American citizens who are peacefully exercising their rights as guaranteed in the Constitution.

If it’s wrong; it’s wrong.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” ? Edmund Burke (1770)

When Schools Reopen, Will Teachers Return?

When schools reopen a significant portion of the teaching workforce could be a risk.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have indicated that 29 percent of all teachers are at higher risk because they are  over the age of 55 and that 92 percent of all of the deaths caused by Covid-19 virus are for people over the age of 55. Those who are over the age of 55 are more vulnerable to the Covid-19 virus and are more prone to have asthma, chronic lung disease, diabetes, kidney disease, severe obesity and liver disease.

The White House would like to open schools in order to get the economy moving. But in order to do that, provision must be made to put teachers back into classrooms so that working parents can work. Also, President Trump doesn’t possess the legal authority to mandate that schools reopen. He has stated, ” I would like to see schools open, wherever possible.” He went on to say that with respect for teachers over the age of 60 or older, ” I think that they should not be teaching school for a while and everybody would understand that fully.”

There are certain potential problems that must be addressed before schools reopen.

  • Educational resources are distributed unequally across the country so some districts will not be able to address all their problems like broadband and sufficient number of computers.
  • Most states are now financially tapped and are making overtures about cutting the number of educators, their salaries or their pensions.
  • According to an AEI (American Enterprise Institute) report, four states have one quarter of  their teachers 55 years and older.
  • Over one quarter of all school principals are over 55 years of age.
  • Those numbers do not account for the educators with other health concerns or with high-risk family members.
  • Both the American Federation (AFT) and the National Education Association (NEA) have said that schools shouldn’t reopen until there is more widespread testing and contract tracing.
  • The New York City Education Department has reported that at least 72 New York City staffers have died including 28 teachers and 28 paraprofessionals. What if this is true in the rest of the country?
  • Most states are already facing a shortage of teachers especially in critical areas such as in Special Education, Science, Math, Technology and English as A Second Language.
  • How will children be transported to school with regard to social distancing?
  • At best, it will be difficult to social distance in school especially in the halls, in physical education classes, in mass locations like lunchrooms and auditoriums?
  • Over 50 percent of students receive free or reduced lunch how can schools continue to feed them if school lunchrooms cannot not provide enough space between students?
  • Class size limits do not provide enough space for social distancing.
  • How will last term’s work be made up? Marked?
  • Will students be promoted to the next grade? To middle or high school?

Schools should not reopen unless there is a vaccine, widely available and distributed, to contain the spread of the coronavirus, widespread testing and tracing of the illness to ensure the public’s confidence that children can safely return to schools. And that teachers and other staff will be protected.
